Bob Bontrager is AACRAO Senior Director of Consulting and SEM Initiatives. He has 30 years of experience in higher education with particular expertise in strategic enrollment management, institutional planning, recruitment, marketing, financial aid, institutional budget strategies, and transfer programs. In his most recent institutional role at Oregon State University, Bob’s leadership resulted in a 40% increase in enrollment, and 14 consecutive years of record enrollment, including increases in the academic and diversity profile of the student body. He previously served as Vice President for Enrollment Management at Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia, where his work also resulted in record enrollments.
Dr. Bontrager has contributed to the ongoing evolution of the SEM profession in the U.S. and abroad as a frequent conference speaker, workshop presenter, consultant, and contributor to the SEM literature. He was Director of the AACRAO SEM Conference for 6 years, leading the conference to record attendance. He has edited three books, Strategic Enrollment Management: Transforming Higher Education (2012), Applying SEM at the Community College (2009), and SEM and Institutional Success: Integrating Enrollment, Finance and Student Access (2008). His work has extended to a number of international locations including Australia, Canada, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Mexico, Mongolia, New Zealand, Qatar, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.
Dr. Bontrager earned his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and Master of Counseling degrees at Arizona State University. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana. He is married with three grown children and works from his home in Corvallis, Oregon.
