How to comply with NSLDS enrollment reporting requirements

In late March, AACRAO and representatives from other organizations met with Federal Student Aid staff at the Education Department to discuss the nearly 1,000 institutions who are out of compliance in their NSLDS enrollment reporting. Specifically, these schools are failing to reach the 90 percent mark in terms of the percentage of students on their NSLDS SSCR rosters with valid program codes.

Increase first-year persistence

The first year of college can be a challenging transition–especially for students with low levels of cultural capital (such as attending music or drama performances or art exhibits). But schools can help less-engaged students build cultural capital, argue Matthew Sinclar, Natalee Erb and John Braxton (Vanderbilt University) in their article “Building Cultural Capital in First-year Students at Residential Colleges and Universities.” Continue reading

Thought Provoking Discussions at AACRAO’s Sixth Annual Executive Symposium

AACRAO’s Executive Symposium, Enhancing Enrollment and Financial Outcomes, took place October 30, 2011, prior to AACRAO’s Strategic Enrollment Management Conference (SEM XXI), at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel. Senior college administrators convened to learn the latest innovations in SEM to enhance financial stability at their campuses.

These leaders learned critical strategies for operating in a down economy and methods to align institutional mission, enrollment goals and planning to improve institutional outcomes. Presentations were delivered by Bob Bontrager, Senior Director of AACRAO Consulting and SEM Initiatives, Jay Goff, Vice President of Enrollment and Retention at Saint Louis University, and Kevin Pollock, President of St. Clair County Community College.

Bontrager shared the importance of data-driven decision making on college campuses and how long term planning is essential for achieving student and institutional goals through strategic enrollment management. Goff covered tuition elasticity, institutional budgets, and education capacity. He described educational capacity as a planning and quality assurance concept and complex management issue that incorporates many variables for a residential research university. Pollock highlighted how SEM can provide leaders of educational institutions with the tools to connect community, regional, and national initiatives with campus goals. He acknowledged that SEM can help to create a data-driven culture that is focused on student success.

The day’s events culminated in a thought-provoking discussion about the nature of SEM. It is not just about financial targets. Indeed, SEM can pave the way for achieving student success and can break down silos at an institution. You can view the recently concluded program at www2.aacrao.org/symposium.
