Using data and research to drive SEM planning

Tom Green, Associate Executive Director, Consulting and SEM, AACRAO; Dan Merian, Director of Enrollment Research and Analysis, University of Michigan Dearborn; and Janet Ward, Senior Consultant at AACRAO, presented a three-hour workshop on the many ways that data are used to support decision-making and strategic enrollment planning and management in higher education.  The workshop opened with the importance of research questions, knowing what we want to learn, in the context of the enrollment cycles of higher education.  These drive how we collect and report data to inform the progress of students in their educational journeys and to predict how our enrollments may materialize in the short and long terms. Research and Data: The Backbone of SEM Planning

Creating a strong SEM plan requires robust research and data analysis.  This can be a daunting task, as many enrollment managers aren’t sure if they are gathering the right research and may not understand the best ways to collect and analyze institutional data.  This year’s AACRAO SEM Conference in San Antonio Hill Country will feature several sessions on research and data analysis, as well as a pre-conference workshop on the topic.

Building the Human Infrastructure of SEM

One of the key elements of success in developing and implementing a strategic enrollment management (SEM) plan is building infrastructure. This has several aspects to it, such as technology, financial resources/budget, staffing, skill sets and institutional structures, formal and informal, which allow strong plans to be developed and executed. In many instances, SEM plans fail not because they lacked innovative ideas or sound foundational data and information but because the human element of infrastructure was ignored or not fully addressed. Register for AACRAO’s Strategic Enrollment Management Conference

Join us in San Diego, October 30-November 2, 2011 for AACRAO’s 21st Annual Strategic Enrollment Management Conference (SEM XXI). For over two decades the meeting has continued to grow and change to meet the dynamic needs of SEM practitioners. Now is the time to craft institution–wide approaches that take student and institutional success to a whole new level. The AACRAO SEM Conference can help you achieve your goals!

Preconference Workshops

In addition to more than 50 breakout sessions that showcase the best in SEM practice, the conference will include seven preconference workshops on the most compelling issues facing higher education today. You may view information for all of the workshops online. Here’s a few highlights:

  • The Core Concepts of SEM
Alicia Moore of Central Oregon Community College and Wayne Sigler of the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities will provide an overview of the concepts and strategies that define successful SEM organizations. Participants will expand their understanding of SEM and take away action plans for achieving enrollment goals upon their return to campus.
  • SEM in the Canadian Context
This workshop will provide a forum related to SEM in Canada. Join Jody Gordon, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Richard Levin, University of Toronto to engage in dialogue and explore case studies.
  • Strategic Enrollment Management by Design
This is a panel discussion featuring Luke Schultheis of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, James Maraviglia, California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, Lee Young, Nevada State College, and Scot Lingrell, University of West Georgia. SEM is not easy to implement on a campus unaccustomed to joint efforts, but the panelists will outline different models for developing, by design, an effective enrollment management program.

Two–Year Institution Track at SEM

This year’s SEM Conference will offer expanded content and opportunities for community college attendees. Search the program online! For complete session descriptions, presenter information, and timeslots, access AACRAO’s searchable database.

Congratulations to the 2010 SEM Award of Excellence Recipients

AACRAO would like to extend congratulations to the 2010 SEM Award of Excellence (SAE) recipients, Brian Dalton and Deborah Robinson.

Brian Dalton is the Senior Vice President of Enrollment Management at Mercer University and was awarded the SEM Award of Excellence representing a four-year institution. Mr. Dalton’s former employer, The College of St. Scholastica attributes an 83% growth in enrollment over a decade, an increase in overall revenue and an improved academic profile of the student body to Mr. Dalton’s strategic decision making.

Deborah Robinson is the Executive Director, Enrolment Management Strategy at the University of British Columbia and was honored with the SAE representing a Canadian institution. Ms. Robinson is credited for being a SEM visionary at the University of British Columbia and contributed to a doubling of enrolment on UBC’s Okanagan’s campus in a five year period.

The SEM Award of Excellence (SAE) is a peer-review awards program that recognizes outstanding achievement and visionary leadership in strategic enrollment management. Selection Criteria for the SEM Award of Excellence include the magnitude of change from prior enrollment to improved results, based on the institution’s goals, including improvement in both recruitment and retention numbers.

Congratulations to the SEM Award of Excellence recipients and all the 2010 nominees. AACRAO acknowledges your contributions to the ongoing development of the SEM profession. The 2010 SEM Award of Excellence was sponsored by Education Systems, Inc.

AACRAO looks forward to receiving nominations for the 2011 SEM Award of Excellence. Solicitations for 2011 recipients will begin in April.
